Washing of feet
Children's sermon
Object:
a basin of water and a towel
Note: Prior to Maundy Thursday ask an adult to have his feet
washed during your object lesson. Be certain to make these
arrangements earlier in the week. Do not wait until your Maundy
Thursday service to do this.
Good evening, boys and girls. I've invited (name the person) to help with our lesson this evening. Tonight's Bible lesson is a story about a foot washing. Jesus and the disciples were having supper. Jesus did something that was very unusual at this supper - at least the disciples thought so. Jesus washed their feet. It wasn't unusual for people in Jesus' day to have their feet washed. Everyone walked to where they were going. The roads were dirty and dusty. Usually servants washed feet. In our story Jesus, who the disciples didn't think of as a servant, washed their feet. Why do you suppose Jesus took the job of a servant and washed the disciples' feet? (Let them answer.) He washed their feet to help them understand that he came into the world as a servant.
Here is what he did. (Have the person wear sandals if possible. Ask the person to remove his sandals. Take the basin of water, get one side of the towel wet and wash both feet. Then dry both feet. Have the person put on his sandals and wait for the lesson to conclude.)
Jesus wanted to show his disciples that he was a servant. So, he did something to them that a servant would do: washed their feet. Jesus wanted them to understand who he was. He wanted them to understand that he came into the world as a servant. He came to save people from sin and Jesus washed their feet as a "new example." Jesus wanted the disciples to love and serve each other as he had served them. Remember that Jesus is God's son and he came to serve. Jesus wants us to be servants too.
