Watching for signs
Children's sermon
Object:
some different kinds of signs that designate safety, such as a stop sign, cross and bones for poison, danger, no trespassing, beware of dog, and so on
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what the word "danger" means? (let them answer) Very good! Danger is something we want to stay away from because if we are not careful we can get hurt. I brought with me this morning some signs that tell us there is danger out there so we can be careful.
First, I brought a stop sign. What kind of danger does a stop sign share with us? (let them answer) Very good! We have to watch out for other cars that are coming from another direction. If we don't stop, there will be a crash. Here is another one. (hold up a bottle with the poison symbol on it) What does this mean? (let them answer) Very good; it means that there is poison in the bottle. If we drink or taste this, we can get very sick. Always stay away from bottles that have poison in them. Let's try a couple of more. (hold up the "Beware of Dog" sign) What does this sign say? Very good. This means we must not go in the dog's yard because he might bite us. Stay away from a yard where you see this sign. There are a lot of danger signs out there and whenever we see them we must be careful.
Saint Paul said the same thing about the way we live. We need to be careful how we live and not do some things that can get us into trouble. We should not steal or hurt others. We should not tell lies or plan how to get things away from friends that belong to them. We should be careful about bad words and not use them, and we should never disrespect our parents. Instead Paul says there is a better way. Whenever you think you may be in danger of saying a bad word, say a prayer to God instead. Instead of taking something from someone, give him or her something that belongs to you. Tell your parents how much you respect them instead of fighting or pouting. Instead of telling a lie, remember how good God has been to you and tell someone else how much God loves him or her.
This is the way to live a careful life. We need to watch out for the signs, and we should always do good things for others. (hold up the signs you brought with you) The next time you see one of these signs, remember that Saint Paul said that we should live a careful life, doing good for others, and always praising God for his love.
