We don't have to do this
Children's sermon
Object:
make an expression of someone who doesn't get his own way
(or show a photo of someone making this expression)
Good morning, boys and girls. I'm going to make an expression
on my face. (Make an expression on your face of someone who
doesn't get his own way, or show a photo of someone making this
expression.) Who can tell me what I'm trying to say? (Let them
try to answer.) Have you ever made this expression when you
wanted to do something, but someone else told you that you can't
do it? You make this expression when you are not able to do what
you want. Let's all try to make this expression. (Encourage the
youngsters to make the expression with you.)
I want to tell you a story about a little girl who made this expression. A little girl was going to have a babysitter come to her house. When the babysitter came, the girl's parents left instructions that the girl must do some homework for a spelling test before she could have her bedtime snack.
The babysitter and the girl then began to have a good time playing with some toys. They had such a great time that they didn't realize how late it was getting. The babysitter said, "Let's stop playing and review your spelling words." The girl answered, "Oh, we're having such a good time, let's forget the spelling words. This is too much fun." The babysitter replied, "No way! We said that we'd review the spelling words. We are now going to do them. Otherwise, you will do very poorly on the test tomorrow." What expression do you think the girl made when she heard this? (Let them answer and show you the expression.)
I'm telling you this story because the same thing happened to Jesus' disciple Peter. Jesus told his disciples that he was soon going to die. Peter stopped Jesus and said, "No, we are having too good of a time. You don't have to do this!" Jesus replied to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan!" Jesus then told Peter that he was not thinking about the right things. Can you imagine what Peter's expression looked like? (Let them answer.)
The next time you have to do something you don't want to do, remember Jesus and Peter. Jesus came to earth for a special reason. Peter wanted Jesus to take the easy path. Jesus knew better. Jesus' answer to Peter made Peter frown.
