Object:
a prayer of confession used in your worship services
I want to read you something. You may have heard this or
something like it before, but it also may be new to you. This is
a special prayer that people use when they want to tell God what
they have done wrong and they want to ask for forgiveness. (Read
the prayer. You may kneel if that is the tradition in your
church.)
Being good is not always easy. It can be very hard to be the
person that God wants us to be. Sometimes even good people make
mistakes and do things that are wrong. When this happens, it is
important to pray and ask God to forgive us. It is important to
tell him that we are sorry, but there's something else that's
important too. The Bible uses the word "repent" in this
scripture. Repenting is more than saying we are sorry. When we
repent we do apologize and ask for forgiveness for a bad thing,
but we also promise not to do it again.
This is a hard thing to do, because sometimes we make the
same mistakes over and over. The important thing is to go to God
in prayer each time we sin and ask his help in doing better the
next time. He can give us the strength to live the way we should,
and when we confess and repent we are asking for both his
forgiveness and his help.
Prayer: Dear God, forgive us for the things we do that are wrong.
Please help us to be the kind of people you want us to be, and
help us come to you for strength and courage. Thank you for being
a God who forgives us and loves us so much. Amen.
