We're always changing

pictures of yourself -- as a baby as well as other times in your life
Good morning! This morning I want to share some pictures
with you. Here's a picture of a baby. Isn't it a cute little
baby? Do any of you have any idea who this baby is? (Let them
answer.)
It is often hard to tell who a baby is. Babies change
so much! A person who is very cute as a baby will grow up
looking very different as an adult. I'll bet you look a lot
different now than you did when you were a baby? Is that right?
(Let them answer.) Lucky for the baby in the picture that he
grew up to be even better looking as an adult. That picture is
me! Can you believe it?
Throughout our whole lives we change. Sometimes we change
quite a bit. Babies seldom look like what they later become as
adults!
The Bible says that we change in other ways as well. Not
only do our looks change, but so does our relationship to God.
The word the Bible uses is that we are being "transformed" into
the glory of God. The longer we know God and the more we learn
about God, then the more we change into God's image. Wow!
Today we celebrate Transfiguration Sunday -- a day when we
read about that day when Jesus was changed. Who can tell me
about that? (Let them answer.) That's right! Jesus changed --
his looks changed. Just as we change, so Jesus changed. But
Jesus changed a great deal in a small time. His clothing became
dazzling white. His skin looked very different. Jesus changed
from being a human being with skin and hair and clothing like we
have to being a bright, shining image. He showed God's glory
when he changed.
We "transfigure" as well. "Transfigure" is similar to the
word "transform." In other words, we change like Jesus changed.
We become more like God the longer and better we know God.
That's exciting. It is exciting to see our bodies change as we
grow up, but it is even more exciting to see our whole selves
change as we become more like God's glory.
Dearest Jesus: Help us to change to be more like God. Amen.
