We're welcome here!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The church should be a safe and
welcoming place, especially for children. The challenge is
twofold: helping the children feel safe and welcome in your
congregation, and helping your congregation see God in the
children. Jesus obviously considered the children important,
even though he lived in a society where children were often
discounted.
People often respond to power. Money is power and so is being an employed and voting adult. Jesus' special ministry was directed at the powerless of his time: children, women, the deaf, the blind, the lame, and the poor. Consider a congregational "Children's Sunday" for Sunday, October 5.
* Invite adults to come to your class and express to the class members their love and appreciation for their parents.
* Ask the children about times when they have felt very much love and welcome in the church (or another place) and when they have not felt such love or welcome.
* Relating the text to life: Explore with your church leaders ways to make the church more child friendly, safe, and welcoming. Help adults and children appreciate each other more.
* Make plans for "Children's Sunday" (See October 5 helps.) Get ideas from the children on how they would like to see a day set aside in their honor. "What would you like for your church, parents, grandparents, and so forth, to do on Children's Sunday?"
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing (and memorize) "Jesus Loves Me" or "Jesus Loves The Little Children." *
Invite the youngest child present (or youngest children present) to come forward as "honored guests" during this morning's opening. Tell how Jesus welcomed the children and one day honored a very young child.
