What the signs tell
Children's sermon
Object:
a cross
Good morning, boys and girls. I have a question for you. When
you come to a stoplight that is red, what do you do? (Let them
answer.) Very good. You stop. What do you do when it turns green?
(Let them answer.) You go. A stoplight is a sign. It tells you
what to do. It tells you to stop or go. There are many other
signs that tell us things. I want to tell you the story of a boy
about your age who saw many signs. As I tell the story see if you
can think what you would do as the boy looks for different signs.
One day the boy's parents went to the grocery store. The boy went along. On the way they came to a stop sign. What did they do at the stop sign? (Wait for them to answer: stop.) They kept going until they saw the grocery store. They drove in the parking lot.
They walked to the doors -- there were two doors. One said "Do Not Enter." The other said, "Enter." Which door did they use? (Wait for them to answer: enter.) They took a shopping cart. They looked for milk. The milk was in aisle number one. So, which aisle sign did they look for? (Wait for them to answer: aisle one.) They continued to shop. Next they needed paper towels, in aisle number 5. Which aisle sign did they look for? (Wait for them to answer: aisle five.) They shopped until they had everything they needed. They looked for the place to pay for their groceries. What would the sign read that would tell them where to pay? (Wait for them to answer: check out sign.) They bought their groceries and went home. You know your signs very well.
This morning I brought a cross with me. It is an important sign for Christians. The cross tells us how powerful and wise God is. When you see the cross who do you think of? (Let them answer.) You think of Jesus. I want you to look at signs this week. When you do, remember the sign that makes you think of Jesus. It is the cross. When you see the cross it tells you that Jesus is the son of God. It tells you that Jesus loves you.
