What time is it?
Children's sermon
Object:
a clock
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know how to tell
time? (Show the clock and let them answer.) Do you think it is
possible for someone to know how to tell time, but not know what
time it really is? (Let them answer.) I want to tell you a story
about two insects who could both tell time. One, however, really
didn't understand what time it was. As you listen to my story,
see if you can decide which insect lived life the way God would
want you to live your life.
Once there was an Ant and a Grasshopper. Grasshopper sat around all day and played his fiddle. He was a great musician and made beautiful music. He played and played all day long. Grasshopper had a friend who was an ant. Ant couldn't play an instrument. Ant worked all day long. Even though it was summer time, Ant always gathered food for winter. Grasshopper thought it was silly for Ant to work all the time.
"Come play with me," Grasshopper told Ant. "It is summer. It is warm outside. There is plenty of food to eat. Don't waste time gathering food for winter, come play."
Ant didn't listen to Grasshopper. Ant kept gathering food and storing it in its home. Finally summer was over. Winter arrived. It was cold outside. There was no food to eat. Grasshopper was cold and hungry. Then Grasshopper remembered that Ant had collected food for winter. So, Grasshopper went to Ant's door and knocked loudly. "Ant, let me in so I can get warm and eat some food."
It was too late. Ant had shut its door for the winter. "Grasshopper," said Ant. "You should have listened to me when there was time to gather food. You should have been ready for winter. It's too late now. I've only been able to collect enough food for me."
Which insect was ready for winter? (Let them answer.) The Bible tells us that we must be like Ant. Jesus will come for us some day. We must be ready for Jesus to return. To be ready for Jesus means we must sometimes ignore things around us. We must not live like Grasshopper lived. Grasshopper lived for the moment. We must live like Ant. We must prepare for Jesus' return. Grasshopper and Ant could both tell time, but Ant really knew what time it was!
