What's an angel?
Children's sermon
Object:
an angel ornament or Christmas card
(Note: This lesson has more questions for children than other
lessons. The lesson is designed for children to give their
thoughts about angels. If you use a microphone, have it ready for
children to give their responses, so that worshipers may hear
these responses.)
Good evening, boys and girls. Can anyone tell me what an angel is? (Let them answer.) Has anyone ever called you an angel? (Let them answer.) What does an angel look like? (Let them answer.) If you could be an angel for one day, would you? (Let them answer.) Angels are important at Christmas time, aren't they? I have one example of what an angel might look like. (Show your example.) I think that the reason we think angels have wings is from tonight's scripture. It says that God makes the angels God's winds. Wings makes me think of flying.
If I were an angel, I think I'd like to be an angel at Christmas time. How many of you remember that it was the angel Gabriel who told Mary that she would have a baby named Jesus? Another angel, whose name we don't know, was important on Christmas Eve. It was an angel who told the shepherds about the baby Jesus.
Angels are very important to God. The angel that appeared to Mary and to the shepherds were God's messengers. The Bible says that angels are spirits in God's service. Angels are very important to God. But there is one other person more important to God than angels. Who do you suppose that person is? (Let them answer.) That person is Jesus. Our Bible story tonight says that Jesus is more important than angels. It says that all God's angels worship him.
This weekend you will see angels on your Christmas tree, on Christmas cards, and even on wrapping paper. Remember that angels are God's messengers. Remember that, like all Christians, angels worship Jesus.
