What's Ascension?
Children's sermon

Good evening! Can anyone tell me why we are in church on
this Thursday night? We are not usually in church on Thursday, so
why are we here tonight? (Let them answer.) Tonight we are
celebrating the ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ. That's a big
word, "ascension." Does anyone know what it means? (Let them
answer.) Well, to ascend means to go up, so ascension means the
act of going up. For instance, have any of you ever ridden on one
of these? (Show the picture and let them answer.) When you ride
on an elevator, you are ascending, going up.
Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus ascended into
Heaven. Do you think he rode up into Heaven on an elevator? (Let
them answer.) No, of course not. Jesus just went up into Heaven
by his own power. Those who were watching just saw him float up
into the air and disappear into the clouds.
This is what we are celebrating here tonight, the ascension
of Jesus. This was the end of his mission here on earth. He had
completed everything that he came to do, so he was returning to
Heaven. Someday he will come back to us in the same way he left.
The clouds will open and he will descend again and take all of us
with him into Heaven. Isn't that something wonderful to look
forward to? (Let them answer.)
Let's speak to Jesus about it.
Dear Lord Jesus: We are so happy to celebrate your ascension into
Heaven, and we look forward to your return when you will gather
us all up and take us with you into Heaven. Keep our faith strong
so we will be ready when you return. Amen.
