What's baptism?
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: This Gospel reading describing the baptism
of Jesus gives us a good opportunity to talk with our children
about baptism. While there are some differences between
Christians about how, when, and why we baptize, it is still true
that all Christian churches believe that baptism is important. We
should use this opportunity to discuss it with the children to
make sure they understand the teaching of your church regarding
baptism.
*Invite your pastor or another church leader to come in and
talk with the children about baptism. The church's teaching about
baptism should be explained in a way that the children can
understand and relate to. It may be desirable to have the person
explain what other churches teach about baptism that differs from
your own.
*Ask the children to draw pictures of Jesus being baptized.
When they are done, let them show their pictures and identify the
people in them. See if they include Jesus, John, the Holy Spirit
as a dove, God the Father speaking from Heaven, other people, and
so forth.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Open with a baptism hymn.
