What's in the heart?
Children's sermon
Object:
a coin
Good morning! I thought we would play a little game this
morning. Do you see this coin? (Show the coin.) We're going to
play a game where we guess who has the coin. Here's how we will
do it. Everybody gets into a circle facing in and I will walk
around behind you and put the coin in somebody's hand. Then I
will ask each of you to tell me if you have the coin. When I ask
you this, you can tell the truth or you can lie about it. We know
lying is wrong, but this is just a game, so it's okay. (Get the
children into a circle facing in with their hands behind them and
place the coin in one child's hand.)
Okay, now I will ask each of you if you have the coin.
Remember you can tell the truth or not. It's up to you. (Question
each child.) Now, let's see if we can guess who has the coin. Is
it _______? Is it _______? (Let them guess, and then reveal
which one has it.)
We played that game so I could show you something. What we
say with our lips is not always true, but we do know whether what
we say is true or not. The Bible tells us that saying we believe
in Jesus is very important, but it doesn't mean anything unless
we really believe in our hearts. Do all of you believe that Jesus
is your personal friend, that he died on the cross to pay for
your sins, and that God raised him from the dead three days after
he died? (Let them answer.) Okay, that's good, but let's be sure
that what we are saying with our lips is what we really, truly do
believe in our hearts. I can't see into your hearts so I hope
what you are saying is what you really believe.
Let's pray.
Dear Lord Jesus: We know that you want us to tell people what we
believe about you. Help us to do that and give us strong faith in
our hearts so that what we say will be what we really believe.
Amen.
