What's an heir?
Children's sermon
Object:
a will or a facsimile of one
Good morning! I have here with me a legal document called a
will. Does anybody know what a will is? (Let them answer.) A will
is a legal document that distributes somebody's property after
they die. Let's suppose a man died and he had a million dollars.
This document would tell who he wanted to have that money after
he was dead. Wills are very important because if there is no
will, then a court has to decide who gets things, and that may
not be at all what the person who died wanted.
Now, the people who are named in the will to get certain
things are called "heirs." The heirs are the ones who receive the
money and property of the person who died. When the will is made,
the person makes a legal promise to give certain things to
certain people. There may be only one heir or there may be many.
It's entirely up to the person who makes the will. One may do
whatever one wants with one's property: give it away to anyone
that one decides to give it to.
Are any of you named as heirs in a will? (Let them answer.)
Well, you may or may not be named in a will like this, but you
are all heirs in a very important way that has nothing to do with
money or property. Can you guess what it is? (Let them answer.)
We are all heirs according to the promise of God! When Jesus
died on the cross, God made a promise that everyone who believed
in Him would inherit eternal life. He has promised to His heirs,
you and me, something much more valuable than money or property.
He has promised us life with Him in heaven forever and ever!
Aren't you glad to be named in God's will as an heir? (Let them
answer.)
Dearest Jesus: We are so glad to be your heirs and know that we
have been given an inheritance of eternal life with you in
heaven. Thank you so much. Amen.
