What's inside
Children's sermon
Object:
a bottle of milk (or a container that you can see the milk), an open box of tissues, a light bulb that can be turned on
... and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. (v. 20a)
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought with me some different things today so that we could learn something about where Jesus lives. Let's see if you can come up with the answer. First, I brought a bottle of milk. It is hard to find a bottle with milk in it today since almost all of our milk comes in cartons. But I want you to tell me where the milk is. (let them answer) Very good, it is right here inside of the bottle. Let's try another one. When I need to blow my nose or wipe a tear what do I use? (let them answer) I use a tissue. Where are the tissues? (let them answer) That's right, inside of the box. You are very smart. Let's try one more. If I need a light so that I can read or find my way around in the darkness what do I use? (let them answer) Is the switch the light? Is the bulb the light? (let them answer) The light is inside of the bulb.
Now, I am looking for Jesus. Where do you think I will find Jesus? I know that Jesus is in this room. I know that Jesus is in the Bible but where else will I find Jesus? (let them answer) Let's search. Where would you look for Jesus if you wanted to really find him? (let them look around with you as you search behind the pulpit, inside the piano, in the flower vase, and so on) Let's think about it a little more and remember what we found a little earlier. Where was the milk? (let them answer) Where were the tissues? (let them answer) Where was the light? (let them answer)
If you want to find Jesus where would you look? (let them answer) Jesus is inside of you! Saint Paul told us that Christ Jesus was living inside of him. Do you love Jesus? Are you baptized in the name of Jesus? Do you pray using the name of Jesus? Jesus lives inside of you just like milk is in a bottle, tissues are in a box, and light is in the bulb. Isn't this wonderful news?
Just imagine what this means to you and me. When we go to school, Jesus is there inside of you. When we go to sleep at night, Jesus is there inside of you. When we are outside playing, Jesus is there inside of you. No matter where you are or what you do, the Lord Jesus is living within you. Amen.
