Where's Jesus?
Children's sermon
Object:
"Where's Waldo?" book or a hidden picture puzzle
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever played
a game where you have to find something in a picture? (Show them
your object and let them answer.) Do you think Waldo is trying to
hide from you, or do you think he wants you to find him? (Let
them answer.)
I want to tell you a story that happened to Jesus. In this story Jesus and his disciples were somewhat like Waldo. They didn't want people to see them. They were working pretty hard teaching and healing people. They worked so hard that they didn't have time to stop to eat lunch or supper. They needed a short vacation from people. They needed to get away from everyone and get some rest.
Jesus told his disciples to get in a boat and sail across the Sea of Galilee to a quiet, lonely place. There they could rest without anyone around them. After they rested, they would be able to return to their work. The disciples were glad for this chance to be by themselves.
But, just like "Where's Waldo?" someone spotted them. When Jesus and the disciples came to the other side of the sea there was a great crowd of people there waiting for Jesus to help them! What do you suppose Jesus did when he saw the crowd? He could have been angry, because he wanted to be alone. He could have become very impatient and told the people to go home. His reaction, however, was different. He felt sorry for the people, because they were in desperate need. He stopped and he helped the people. Jesus helped the people because he had the heart of God, the God of love.
The next time you are looking for Waldo, or looking for hidden objects in a picture puzzle remember that Jesus is always there. Jesus is not trying to hide from us. Jesus cares for us. Jesus is never too busy for us. When we need Jesus he is there for us.
