Which direction?
Children's sermon
Object:
a compass
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to go hiking? (wait for a show of hands) What do you need to go hiking? (let them answer) You need good hiking shoes or boots, some water for your hike, and a buddy so you're not alone. I brought something else with me that you didn't think of yet. Do you know what it is? (show them the compass and let them answer) It's called a compass. It shows people directions like north, south, east, and west. Why might someone take a compass on their hike? (let them answer) It would be good to have a compass in case you got lost. You would know what direction you needed to go in and the compass would point you in the right direction.
If you went on a hike in an unfamiliar place, you might want someone to go with you who knew their way and wouldn't get lost. Without a leader who knows the way, it would be scary hiking.
Our lesson is about Jesus' friends. They had Jesus for their leader. Jesus showed them the way to live and he was a good leader. But when Jesus died, they lost their leader. I imagine they were scared of getting lost without Jesus. They didn't know yet that Jesus was alive. They just didn't know what they were going to do next without him. They were afraid.
But Jesus was alive. He came to tell them that he was alive. He said, "Peace be with you." Jesus had said that before and it calmed them down. Now they knew which direction to go, because Jesus was alive and with them. Jesus was like a compass to the disciples because he could point them in the right direction with those four little words, "Peace be with you." They felt safe and loved. When we are afraid, we can listen very carefully to those words, too: Peace be with you. Let's say it together. (repeat it together) Peace be with you!
