White robes
Children's sermon
Object:
A white cloth and some red liquid in water (i.e., red ink
or red food dye)
Good morning! The Bible tells us that when we go to heaven,
we will be able to stand before God in robes that have been washed
white in the blood of the Lamb. Who can tell me what color blood
is? (Let them answer.) That's right; blood is red. Now how in the
world can we wash something in red and have it turn white? That
doesn't sound reasonable, does it? (Let them answer.)
Well, let's try it. I have here a white cloth. I'm going to
wash it in this red water and see what happens. (Put the cloth in
the water and slosh it around.) Let's take a look at it. Is the
white cloth now a brighter white or is it less white than it was?
(Let them answer.)
If we had really washed it in blood, it would have been
stained badly, wouldn't it? Have you ever had blood on your
clothing? It really is hard to get that clothing clean, isn't it?
(Let them answer.)
So, from this we can see that God must mean something else
when he says we can wash our robes white in the blood of the Lamb.
What do you think it means? (Let them answer. Probably, nobody
will be able to explain it.)
Let me tell you what it means. God is telling us that we can
stand before him in white robes because Jesus died for us on the
cross. The white robe means that we stand before God as perfect
people who have never sinned. Of course, we all have sinned, but
Jesus washed our sins away. That's why it says we have washed our
robes in the blood of the Lamb. When Jesus died on the cross, he
paid for our sins with his blood. Do all of you believe in Jesus,
and do you know that he is your friend? (Let them answer.)
Everyone who believes in Jesus will be able to put on one of
these white robes and go to heaven. Is that what all of you want
to do? (Let them answer.)
Dear Jesus: We thank you for going to the cross and shedding your
blood there for us so that we can stand before God in white robes.
Amen.
