Who am I?
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: To Christians Jesus is more than an
exclamation or curse word. Jesus is more than a historical
figure. Jesus is our Lord and our Savior. He is everything!
* Explore the personhood of Jesus. Draw pictures that tell of his humanity: his birth, his baptism, his walking the countryside and teaching. Draw pictures that tell of his divinity: his healing, his miracles and his resurrection.
* Using old Sunday school materials, children's bulletins, or original drawings, make a large "Life of Christ" collage to display in your room.
* Jesus was human and divine, but more than that, Jesus is our friend. As a parent or teacher, share with your children how Jesus is your best friend and constant companion -- even though he cannot be seen, touched, or heard. Invite others from the congregation to share their friendship with Jesus stories.
* Reread the Gospel Lesson and explain who John the Baptist was and how he had been murdered. Tell about the prophet Elijah. Tell about the role of the prophets. Try to re-create the sense of expectancy in the first century.
* Jesus instructed his disciples not to tell anyone who he was (v. 30). Contrast this with Jesus' desire that we tell the world about him.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* If you have not already done so, introduce all the teachers and helpers for this fall's Sunday school. Say, "These are the people who will help us better know someone else. That person we all will get to know better is named Jesus."
* Explain the name Jesus (from "Joshua" -- which means "he who saves"). Explain other terms commonly used to describe Jesus, such as Savior, Lord, Messiah, Christ, and so forth. A good Bible dictionary will tell the meaning of each name.
