Who is the king?
Children's sermon
Object:
a crèche or nativity scene including the figures of the three Wise Men
(Show your nativity scene) See what I have with me today? What is this? (answers) This is a set of figures that help us see what it might have looked like in the stable where Jesus was born. Somewhere in this scene is a great, powerful and mighty king. Can anyone show him to me? (see if they can figure out whom you mean) Yes, there are the three Wise Men. Sometimes we call them kings. They were probably very wealthy and special people, but none of them are the king I mean.
The baby Jesus is the king I want you to see. (hold up the baby) This tiny baby is called the King of Kings. The world had waited for him for a long time. People had told stories about what he would be like. They imagined a powerful ruler who would sweep away all the bad things in the world. They imagined a kind of superhero that would make everything all right. They waited and waited and prayed for God to send him.
Finally, he did come. (show the baby again) He came as a baby like this. He doesn't much look like a powerful ruler, does he? Lots of people didn't recognize Jesus as God's Son. They expected him to look differently. Instead of looking powerful and rich, Jesus looked just like they did!
That's just what God wanted. Jesus looked like us and lived like us so that he could know what our lives are really like. Because of that, he understands us better. He can help us because he knows what we need. That's why Christmas is such a big deal, because God sent his Son to live with us. Because of Christmas, we are closer to God and he is closer to us.
Prayer: Jesus, you love us so much. You didn't have to leave your kingdom, but you did. Thanks for coming to be with us. Amen.
