Whodunit?
Children's sermon
Object:
a mystery novel and a Bible
Good morning! How many of you can read? (Let them answer.)
What do you like to read? What kinds of books are your favorites?
(Let them answer.) A lot of people like this kind of book. (Show
the book.) This kind of book is called a mystery novel. Most of
them are about somebody being murdered, and the mystery part is
finding out who did the murder. You don't find that out until the
last chapter. For that reason, they will sometimes call this kind
of book a "Whodunit?"
Now, this book is not a mystery novel (show the Bible), but
there are a lot of mysterious things in this book. In a way, you
could also call the Bible a "Whodunit?" The Bible tells us all
about what God has done for us. It tells us that God is the one
who did all that was necessary so that you and I could go to
Heaven. Before Jesus came into the world, that was a big mystery.
Jesus unraveled the mystery and told everyone the truth about God
and what God wanted all of us to do. If I were to ask you today
about who it was that saved you and opened the door to Heaven for
you, who would you say "dunit"? (Let them answer.) Of course, you
are right! Jesus is the one who "dunit."
So God doesn't keep us in suspense like the authors of
mystery novels do. He has told us very clearly in this Bible who
Jesus is and all that he has done for us. Because God has
revealed all that to us, it is not a mystery, it's a fact! Let's
thank Him for revealing it to us.
Dear God in Heaven: We are grateful that You have revealed the
truth to us in Your Bible. It is not a mystery to us. We know who
our Lord and Savior is: Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
