The whole alphabet

Various wooden blocks with letters -- make sure the
letters A and Z are on at least two of them (a stack of alphabet
cards would do as well)
Happy New Year! When I think of a whole new year that we are
at the beginning of, I think of the alphabet. I have all these
blocks and they remind me of all that could happen in the new
year. I can spell any word in our language with these blocks.
Anything could happen. I could spread the blocks out and come up
with all kinds of words.
In a similar way this is the beginning of a whole new year. Aren't new years exciting? We know all kinds of things will happen in the next year, but we don't know exactly what, when, how or where. That's exciting! It's kind of like all these blocks. We just don't know what kinds of words will come from them. Every word that can be made is here!
When we don't know what might happen, it is exciting. It can be scary, too. Maybe something bad will happen. We just don't know. Anything can happen.
(Take the A and Z blocks.) One thing I know. The alphabet begins with the letter A and ends with the letter Z. I know something even more important. Jesus is with us this whole year! He once said that he is like the A of the alphabet and the Z of the alphabet. He was there in the beginning and he will be there at the end. Jesus is with us today and he will be with us on the last day of this year as well -- just as A is the beginning of the alphabet and Z is the end. He promised. I know we can believe Jesus' promises.
Dear Jesus: Thank you for being with us at the beginning of this new year. Help us make it a good year. Amen.
