Good morning! How many of you know what Sunday this is? (Let
them answer.) This is "Trinity Sunday," a special Sunday in which
we honor the "Holy Trinity." Now does anybody know what that is?
What is the Holy Trinity? (Let them try to answer. It's doubtful
they will have a good answer.)
Let me see if I can explain it to you. It's not easy because
there is a lot we can't understand about it, but let me see if I
can give you an idea of what it means. You know about God, the
Father. When we say the Lord's Prayer, we start it by saying,
"Our Father." You also know about Jesus who came down to earth
and lived here. Jesus is also God, but he is called "The Son." So
we have God the Father and Jesus who is God, the Son. Who is the
third person in the Trinity? (Let them answer.) Yes, it's the
Holy Spirit who is also God. These three make up the Trinity, but
they are not three separate Gods. They are three persons in one
God. Now I realize that's kind of hard to see, but it's true,
and we just have to accept it as true until we get to Heaven
where God will explain it all to us. In the meantime, we worship
God as three persons in one God, and we call that the Holy
Trinity.
Do you see that baptismal font over there? Were any of you
baptized there? (Let them answer.) Do you know in whose name we
are all baptized? (Let them answer.) Well, when we are baptized,
we are baptized in the name of the Trinity. The pastor baptizes
by pouring water on us and saying, "I baptize you in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." So all of us
are baptized in the name of the Trinity.
On this Trinity Sunday, let's say a prayer to the Trinity.
Dear Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: It is hard for us to
understand how you are three persons in one God, but we thank You
for giving us faith so that we can accept things like this which
we don't fully understand.
