Why be a caterpillar?
Children's sermon
Object:
pictures of a caterpillar and a butterfly
(Hold up the picture of the caterpillar.) What is this? A
caterpillar! Tell me some things that you know about
caterpillars. (Listen for responses.) They live their lives like
this for a while, eating plants, crawling around on the ground,
and trying not to get eaten by birds. Can they fly? No, not the
way they are when they're like this, but they aren't always
caterpillars, are they?
(Hold up the picture of the butterfly.) What's this? A
butterfly! You probably already know that caterpillars turn into
butterflies. Isn't that amazing? It's the same animal, but yet
not the same! How can that be? That old caterpillar becomes
something that can do different things and live his life in
completely different ways. Now that caterpillar can fly, can't
he? Once he becomes a butterfly he can do things he probably
never imagined!
This is just like in our lesson: ". if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" When
we believe in Jesus Christ and accept him as our Savior, we
become new people, even though in many ways we are still the same
people we were before. Because of Jesus and his love for us, we
can become people capable of doing things we never imagined we
could. How exciting this is! God wants us to share this good news
with the whole world!
Prayer: Thank you, God, for loving us the way you do. Thank you
for making us into new creations who can approach our lives in
whole new ways. It is good to know that we have chances to start
over. Please help us learn to fly like butterflies! Amen.
