Will you remember?
Children's sermon
Object:
do something that is different from the norm like sing a song, eat a
banana, read a poem, or take the children to a different part of the church for the
message. Do something that will make this day different from any other.
We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on
the holy mountain. (v. 18)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you remember what you did last Monday, the day after you were in church on Sunday? (let them answer) It is kind of hard to remember, isn't it? How many of you remember the children's sermon from last Sunday? (let them answer)
You are going to remember the children's sermon today because it is going to be something special. (Do whatever you have chosen to be a memorable event. Perhaps you can do several of the above like move the children to another location, make them all stand on one leg, wear a strange hat, eat a banana, or hum a tune.)
How many of you will remember today as a special children's sermon day? (let them answer) That's really good because we haven't even talked about the sermon. The reason that I want you to remember this day as a special day is because this is the Transfiguration of our Lord. Can you say, "Transfiguration"? (let them repeat it several times) How many of you remember the day that Jesus was transfigured? (let them answer) Let me help you. One day, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain and while they were there, two spirits visited them. Jesus also turned brilliantly white, almost like light itself. The three disciples wanted to stay there and live, but Jesus told them that they had to go down the mountain.
Years later, Peter wrote in one of his letters about this transfiguration day, and he said he would never forget it. He also said he remembered it because he was there and he saw it. It was an amazing day.
Today, we celebrate the Transfiguration of our Lord and we recall that great event. We remember it because the disciples Peter, James, and John were there and they saw it and heard the voice of God say that he was very pleased with Jesus his Son.
How many of you will remember today? How many of you will remember the time Jesus took his three disciples up the mountain and listened while Jesus talked with Moses and Elijah and heard the voice of God speak to them? I think you will remember. Amen.
