Words and the Word
Children's sermon
Object:
a dictionary
Probably every word you know is in this book. What is this
book called? (Let them answer.) That's right. It's a
dictionary. It has every word you and I know plus many that we
don't know.
Words are important to us. We put words together and
explain to people what we think about things and how we feel. We
can tell our parents if we are hungry, or tired, or bored, or
excited. We do that by using words.
One day Jesus went back to his home town of Nazareth and he
sat in the place that was very much like a church. It was the
place people gathered to worship God. It was called a
"synagogue." In the synagogue Jesus read some words of
scripture, much as we will read words of scripture here today.
And then he began to put words together that made everyone very
pleased. The Bible says: "All spoke well of him and were amazed
at the gracious words that came from his mouth." They were very
amazed at how Jesus used words. They couldn't believe it was
somebody they knew. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son? Don't
we know this man?" That is how impressed they were with Jesus.
But then Jesus continued using words, and he told the people
of Nazareth that day that they really didn't know God as well as
they thought they knew God. Who can tell me how the people acted
then? (Let them answer.) They became very angry. They got so
angry at Jesus they wanted to kill him! Wow! They were angry!
And all because of words!
What this tells me is that words are very important. It
tells me that the words of Jesus were especially important. Even
today when we read the words of Jesus we show their importance by
standing (if indeed this is your church's tradition). We
especially listen to what the Bible says because it tells us
about Jesus: his life; his words; his actions. We even call
Jesus himself "the Word of God."
Dearest Lord: Thank you for the words of Jesus and the words
about Jesus. Thank you for the Bible. Amen.
