Working as God's representative
Children's sermon
Object:
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. (v. 15)
Object: a job application
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you are looking for a job? (let them answer) No one is looking for a job? Doesn't anyone want to be a police officer, a teacher, or a nurse? (let them answer) Maybe you're not looking right away, but some day you will graduate from school and you'll want to find a job.
When you look for a job it's important to do certain things. You should dress your best, comb your hair, brush your teeth, and make sure to smile. Looking good is important. The people in charge of hiring will ask you to fill out a job application. I brought a job application with me this morning. Let's take a look at it. It asks for your name, address, and telephone number. It wants to know if you have had a job before and what kinds of things you did there. It wants to know if you have any special skills like working on a computer. If you have the skills the company is looking for, they may hire you.
Saint Paul says that we should approach God like we're looking for a job. We should make sure to look our best and tell him how happy we are to represent him in this world. How would you like to go next door today and tell your neighbor that you represent a loving God? As God's representative you can smile for people, ask them what you can do to help, and say a prayer to thank God for your friendship. Wouldn't that be wonderful? (let them answer)
We can practice on our own family today. After church you can say to your parents, "Mom and Dad, I love you and God loves you. I represent God and I would like to help you in any way I can." Then you can pray, "Thank you, God, for making me a Christian and for sharing your love with my family. Amen."
Tomorrow when you get up and go out to play, you can represent God with your friends and neighbors. Ask them if they will say a short prayer with you. Then pray, "Thank you, God, for giving me good friends and neighbors and for sharing your love with them. Amen." Maybe your friends will want to join you in helping a neighbor. You can pick up trash, pull some weeds, or run some errands.
Saint Paul had a good idea. I hope you have a wonderful week. Maybe we can talk about this next week and see what kind of representatives you have been for God.
