Working at peace
Children's sermon
Object:
a piece of candy
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you ever get into arguments with friends? (Let them answer.) What do you argue about? (Let them answer.) I want to tell you the story about two girls about your age who were best friends. They enjoyed doing things together. How many of you have a best friend? (Let them answer.) As I tell my story imagine that it is about you and your best friend.
The two girls liked to play together. They would often play school. One girl would be the teacher and the other would be the student. Sometimes they would play house. When they did this they pretended that they were sisters. Sometimes they would play house with their pets. Their pets would be their children. Sometimes they would play hide and seek outdoors. They were really best of friends. One day, for some reason, they got into an argument. I'm not certain what the argument was about. They became angry with one another and both girls went home. That didn't last long however. One of the girls wanted to get together with the other and talk about the problem. She went to the candy jar in her house and took some pieces of candy. She took the candy to her friend. She said, "Here are some pieces of candy for you. (Show the candy.) I hope we can still be friends." The other girl was very happy to see her friend. She said, "I can't remember what we were arguing about. Let's start again and be friends." The two friends forgave each other and were happy again.
This story reminds me of this morning's lesson. The lesson says that people who make peace with each other will be happy people. This week, you may get into an argument with a friend or a family member. If you do, you be the one to go and say, "I'm sorry about our fight. Let's be friends again." When you do that you are making peace with the other person. The Bible says when you make peace with someone you will lead a happy and good life.
