Worried
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Children can teach adults a great deal
about not worrying. They may even have to learn from you the
meaning of the word "worry."
Very soon in life we learn that our worth depends upon what we do -- our productivity or talent. We also learn to value our possessions above other things. It is easy to value things above relationships. Jesus teaches us that relationships -- with one another and with God -- are supreme (even in our busy, hectic world). The gospel teaches us that our worth does not depend upon anything but the grace of God.
List on a piece of paper or on the board all the possible things that the children could be doing -- if they were not in Sunday church school or worship: playing ball, watching television, cleaning their rooms, attending a different kind of class, playing video games, working with a computer, and so forth.
Then show the children how these things are all important, but that the most important thing they are doing right now is listening to Jesus -- just as Mary chose the best thing over her sister a long time ago. Life consists of choices and we have to learn to choose that which is most valuable: God and the kingdom of God. It's called "priorities."
