A wretch like me
Children's sermon
Object:
a filthy rag covered with ink stains and a clean one of
similar size
When I think of what Paul says in these verses I think of a
wonderful hymn titled "Amazing Grace." Do any of you know it? How
does that first verse go? ...
In that verse it talks about how God's grace saved a "wretch like me." A "wretch" is a very, very bad person. I brought this dirty rag along to show this. Paul once compared his life to a piece of dirty rag. Today he says that he is "the least of the apostles." Paul thought of himself as a very bad person.
Sometimes we think of ourselves as being very bad people. And when we think this way, it is very good to remember what else Paul says. Paul says that it is God's grace that saved him and made him clean -- as clean as this rag.
The same is true with you and me -- no matter how bad we may be at times, God's grace reaches down to pick us out of the dirt and filth and make us clean. "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me." It is amazing how God can make us clean of our sins -- no matter what those sins might be.
That is what I think of on this wonderful Easter morning. God makes me clean and bright. I like that!
