Written down!
Children's sermon
Object:
a pencil and paper
God says that a day is coming when he will put his laws in
people's hearts and will write them in people's minds. How do
you suppose God will do this? Will God take a piece of paper
like this and a pencil and then write down the laws God makes up
and then stuff them inside people's heads? (Let them answer.)
If God doesn't do that, how does God get the message across? How does God speak to us so that we can know what God wants? How can we hear what God wants to tell us and make what we hear a part of who we are? Those were the kinds of questions God had about us. God answered those questions in a very ingenious way. God himself became God's own word. God became a person. The person God became we call ... (Let them answer.) We call Jesus God's word made flesh.
When Jesus did something on this day long ago, it helped us remember God's word, God's message to us. What did Jesus do on this day? (Let them answer.) Jesus died on the cross. By doing that, God's word became a part of us. God was able to write his word in our hearts and minds.
And what is God's word to us? (Let them answer.) It is the word of love. God loves us. We know that because Jesus went all the way to the cross to tell us that word. That word of God's love for each of us is now in our hearts (make a motion around the heart) and our minds (use hand motions here, too).
So Jesus is part of us because God's word fills us. What Jesus did on the cross speaks to us better than any word spoken with the mouth could speak.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for dying on the cross for us. You tell us of God's love and we thank you for that love. Amen.
