hammer, saw, perhaps other carpenter's tools
If I carried these tools around with me a lot, what do you
think my job might be? (Let them answer.) I would probably be a
carpenter. What if I carried a scanner radio with me? (Let them
answer.) Then perhaps I'm a paramedic or a volunteer firefighter.
You can tell what people do for a living by what they have with them and what they do. I often have a Bible with me. Some ministers wear a shirt with a funny-looking collar. That tells what they do, doesn't it? You can tell by the clothes people wear and what people take around with them just what they do for a living. You can especially tell by what they do.
Jesus told the people many, many times that he was the Messiah. He told people with his words, but especially with his actions. He preached, taught, and healed many people. These were the actions of a Messiah. The people should have known who he was, but some people caught Jesus one day and said to him, "Why don't you tell us if you are the Messiah?"
Jesus told them that he did tell that he was the Messiah, but they would not believe him. Those who know Jesus know that he is the Messiah. Those who do not know him, don't know who he is. That is true even today.
We know that Jesus is God's son and our Messiah because we know Jesus. We can't see Jesus, but we can see his works by looking at the works of the church and the people who know him. What we do tells who he is. This is why what we do is important.
