You welcomed me
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: Often children wonder what they can do to
participate in the life of the church. This week's activity
offers such participation. Focus on the verse "I was a stranger
and you welcomed me," from today's scripture. Try to obtain a few
names and addresses of recent visitors to your church. If your
church has attendance pads or a visitor's book, refer to it for
addresses. Have your students write these visitors a short letter
thanking them for visiting.
If your students are just learning to write, have them draw a picture of your church. Help them write "Thanks for visiting our church." Have each student sign her name. You might write a brief cover letter, explaining that this is a project from your Sunday school class. Older students might write a short letter thanking them for coming. These students might write about themselves or write about something they do in Sunday school. A drawing of the church could also be added. You could have students add "Matthew 25:35b" to the letter. This is the reference to welcoming strangers.
Parents: This week's Bible verse makes reference to feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing those who need clothing and visiting the sick. If you have a community food bank or clothing thrift store, see if you could take your child there to make a donation. Perhaps there is a toy that your child would like to donate. If you are aware of someone in your congregation in the hospital, help your child send that person a card of cheer. Read verses 35 and 36 of this week's lesson to your child, to help explain your activity.
