Your heart
Children's sermon
Object:
a black heart, a red heart, and a white heart
The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into
the world to save sinners -- of whom I am the foremost. (v. 15)
Good morning, boys and girls. Does anyone here know a sinner? (let them answer) What does a sinner look like? (let them answer) Do you think sinners are ugly? Do they have big noses, red eyes, and pointed teeth? Do they walk and talk ugly? (let them answer) Are they really bad people who steal, cheat, or commit murder? Are those the sinners that we talk about? (let them answer)
I think sinners have a black heart. They think about evil things and do evil things. They like to work in dark places and hide themselves from the rest of the people. Let's see who has a black heart. Do you know anyone that tells lies? Do you know anyone that blames other people for things they have done? Do you know anyone that says they hate someone like a mother or a father or a sister or a brother? Those kinds of people have black hearts. Do you think you may have a black heart? Are you a sinner? (let them answer)
I also know someone that has a red heart. His name is Jesus and his heart is red because he died on a cross for sinners. Do you think Jesus died for sinners? Do you think he died for you? Did Jesus die so that you might be forgiven for the times you lied, cheated in a game, and hated people in your family or other friends? (let them answer) That red heart can cover all the sins of a black heart. No one is too filled with sin to cover the red heart. The red heart covers the black heart and makes the sin go away.
But there is a third heart. It is a white heart. This white heart is the kind of heart that a person has after Jesus has taken away all of our sin. The blackness is gone and our lives are beautiful. Our white hearts are filled with joy because the Savior Jesus Christ has forgiven our sin and lives inside of us.
We need to remember though that sometimes ugly sin creeps back into our hearts and turns our hearts from white to black, an ugly, ugly black. When this happens we crowd out our Savior. Jesus is pushed away from us and made very sad. When we see again what sin does to us, we ask Jesus to forgive us. The red heart comes and covers our black hearts and changes us into white-hearted people.
This is a story of the three colors of a heart. We want to remember that sinners are people like us that crowd out Jesus from our lives. When we ask God to come into our lives and bring us forgiveness for our sins, then our hearts can change from black to white.
I pray that you ask God to forgive you every day for your sins and to thank him for giving you a pure, clean, white heart. Amen.
