A to Z
Children's sermon
Object:
a baby's rattle, and a bottle with a nipple on it
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." (v. 36)
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought along some things like the things you used when you were a baby. (show them the rattle and the bottle) Do you remember when you shook a rattle like this one? (let them answer) You were so beautiful and you would take the rattle while you were in your crib and just shake it and shake it. As you grew a little bigger you would play tricks on your mom and dad and throw the rattle out of the crib and make them pick it up. Do you remember those tricks? (let them answer) Maybe you will remember this a little better. (show them the bottle with a nipple on it) Everyone loved their bottles. Sometimes the only way we could keep you quiet was to stick this bottle into your mouth. Do you remember when you used your bottle? (let them answer)
You don't really remember using them because they are not a part of your world today. Now you eat pizza, play video games, ride bicycles, and draw pictures. You are growing up and the things you did when you were a baby are all forgotten. Instead you are thinking about what you are going to do today and what you are going to do tomorrow.
When Jesus was living among people like Peter, Mary, King Herod, Pilate, and all of the thousands of other people, they just could not understand who Jesus was in this life. Some wanted him to be the king of Israel, others wanted him to be a doctor and heal the sick, others wanted him to be the greatest teacher of all time, and a few thought that Jesus should be the king of the whole earth. Jesus told them that he was not a king for this world but people would not believe him. If he were going to be a king in this world he said that he would have great armies and he would fight hard to be a free king and never captured by other soldiers.
Jesus was to be the king of a new world, the kingdom of God. It is a world of peace and love and filled with joy. It is an honest world where people do not cheat or steal or murder. His world is a world where God rules but where people have clean hearts and know nothing about sin. This is the kingdom for Jesus. He is the great king, the Christ, who lives forever. His kingdom does not need armies or police to keep the people in order. The people who live in this world could not understand him and since they could not understand him they were afraid of him and they wanted him to be put away, even killed, to make sure that a God of peace and love would not be their king.
So Jesus told everyone that he was the A to Z. He was there in the beginning and he will be the king of their lives when everything else ends. Amen.
