1 Kings 8 is a rebuke to those who would seek to contain God within the church or creed or denomination or nation!
God is so great that the heavens cannot hold God, and certainly not walls of our local church. What is the appropriate response to this recognition? It just might cause us to awe which just might come out as trite. Astronaut Wally Schirra told of being with Walter Cronkite when we were about to land on the moon. Schirra asked Cronkite what he was going to say at such an important place in the world's history. Cronkite replied that he had several things he might say. What did this suave, veteran commentator say when we finally landed on the moon? Cronkite said such profound words as "Gee! Gosh! Wow!"
Probably we are more inclined to forget God's greatness and the fact of
God's eternity. It was on June 21, 1964, that Michael H. Schwermer, Andrew Goodman and James F. Chaney disappeared in Philadelphia, Mississippi where they were engaged as civil rights workers. Some at the time wished them harm, but others worried that good would not ultimately prevail. While their murderers were not executed, their murderers ultimately lost the war.
What great things are ahead if we could but see them! On June 21, 1788, the U.S. Constitution came into force as New Hampshire ratified it. Little could they know the importance of their act. On June 21, 1945, the Japanese on Okinawa surrendered, pointing the way to the ultimate victory of WWII. The Berlin War has fallen. How great is the future! And ultimately God, our great God, will be victorious!
