In 1982, a Boeing 737 crashed into the Potomac River, killing 78 people. Five people were heroes that day. Four of the people who saw the plane go down risked their own lives to help the few survivors get out. One man, Arland Williams, Jr., a bank examiner from Atlanta and father of two, also went into the water.
A helicopter pilot lowered two ropes, and the fellow in the middle handed off both to another man and a woman. After they were out, the copter returned twice more and pulled out other passengers. Each time, the fellow in the middle passed the rope to others. When the copter came back once more, the man could not be seen. He was underwater and he drowned. The man in the middle was Arland Williams.
The people saved were redeemed by the blood of one who willingly gave his life for another.
