In the 1984 movie, Splash, there is a scene in which the main character, Allen Bauer (played by Tom Hanks) gives a beautifully wrapped gift to the mermaid (played by Daryl Hannah), who has temporarily taken on human form. The mermaid, never having received a gift before, takes the box, lovingly strokes the ribbon and the bow, and expresses her thanks over and over again. She clutches the still-wrapped present to herself, tears in her eyes. Allen has to help her realize it's not the wrapped box that's important, but the mysterious gift concealed within.
At Epiphany we celebrate a mystery: the mystery of the incarnation. Much of our culture celebrates only the outer wrappings in which that mystery comes to us: the Christmas holiday. Our challenge is to open the gift.
