In 1996 James Hood made a trip to Alabama, where he met with former governor George Wallace. As you might remember, George Wallace was a leading segregationist back in the 1960s and it was Wallace who stood on the steps of the University of Alabama and tried to turn away those first black students who the courts had ruled had to be admitted. Well, James Hood was one of those black students. James Hood had returned to the University of Alabama, where he planned to finish his doctorate degree. So he visited George Wallace and requested that Wallace himself present him the degree at the graduation ceremony. Certainly James Hood had every good reason never to forgive Governor Wallace for what he did. But Hood thought that it was more important to put those old matters behind them so that they could come together. That is an instance of reconciliation, quite similar to the reconciliation that is celebrated in this parable. -- Bowen
