In 1996, U.S. News and World Report magazine ran an article about how Americans are no longer civil to each other. The article dealt with how most people today treat each other rudely, showing very little respect for one another. The article reported a survey in which ninety percent of all Americans said that the loss of civility was a serious problem in our country. But that same survey found that 99 percent of all Americans say that they themselves are civil. In other words, almost everyone agrees that people in this country are too rude and mean. But only about one person in a hundred is willing to admit that he or she is a part of the problem.
