In 1997 the mayor of Los Angeles proposed a change in the law that would allow the city to shut down some houses where gangs had their hangouts. The reason, of course, was that in Los Angeles, like many other big cities, gangs have turned the city streets into a virtual war zone. But when the mayor announced those changes that he was proposing, as might have been expected, the gangs were not pleased. And so they proceeded to spraypaint graffiti all over the mayor's house. Sometimes we are tempted to think that some people are simply beyond any prospect for repentance. But Jesus teaches us to hope that every person will indeed change.
