At 38, Steve had not been in a hospital since his birth. Normally, he was a robust long distance trucker with an attitude best described as "macho." The early warnings of kidney failure and the consequent hospitalization emotionally took a toll.
When I entered the room, Steve was sitting cross-legged in the center of his bed. He was reading the stack of prayer cards the congregation had written him during morning worship. It was a normal practice during the "Announcements and Concerns" for people to write a postcard to anyone mentioned on the prayer list.
Although Steve had helped collect these cards with the morning offering, he had never been on the receiving end. As he read, tears were streaming down his weathered cheeks. "I just didn't know so many people cared. I never realized what it means for someone to pray for you."
"Finally, pray for us (v. 1)" Certainly Paul understood the power that comes from this.
