Among the Scriptures which our Lord Jesus referred to from the Old Testament was Jeremiah 31 when, in the institution of the Last Supper, he said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood." Can you see our Lord as he passed the cup among his chosen disciples, giving them a vivid lesson of himself as the new covenant? Later, they remembered all these things.
Covenants made between God and humans were numerous. This one superseded all the rest. The Old Testament was to be based on the laws written on tablets of stone. The New Testament or covenant was to be based on laws written within the hearts of persons. Such laws surpassed a written moral code as they dealt with inward motivation and power.
The law was not destroyed, because we know that the commandments of God given to Moses were eternal and intended to be universal. We become living witnesses to this teaching as God puts it in our hearts and the new covenant becomes our personal experience with the Lord.
