According to Luke the name...

According to Luke the name Jesus was God-given. It is one of the same rootage as the Hebrew name Jeshua or Joshua and means "God will save." Many Hebrew names bore a Godward reference. Our names are given by our parents. We invest those names with meaning for good or ill. Lord Chesterfield was known for his love of comfort. Hence a chesterfield is a comfortable divan. Patrick Hooligan was an Irish roughian. A hooligan is a hoodlum. What would our names be if they were given to us by God instead of our parents? Mr. Arrogance? Miss Indifferent? Our names can get a lot of blotches on them. Can we get a new name? In a novel that came out of World War I, Le Feu, by Henry Barbusse, there is this episode. The scene is a dugout filled with wounded men. Two friends lie side by side. One of them knows he is dying and cannot hold out until he reaches a hospital. He says to his friend: "It can't be long now. Listen, Dominique. You've had a bad life. There are many convictions against your name. But there are no convictions against me. Take my name. Take it! I give it to you. Straight off, you've no more convictions. Take my name, and give me yours so that I can carry it all away with me." Something here suggests the mystery of the gospel. -- Kolsti
