Admiral George W. Anderson, chief of naval operations, in accepting the University of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal said: "Today, with planes streaking across the sky with twice the speed of sound, with missiles constantly set to hurtle thousands of miles a few seconds after an order is given, time for reflection, for conscious deliberation may be denied us. Now as never before, we need to hear God's voice."
God and the nation! Occasionally, we see a Bible with a likeness of the American flag appearing on an inside cover page. The implication being that God and America are in partnership ... a nation under God. But the implication is not always consistent with actualities.
In 1953, Attorney General John Ben Shepperd addressed delegates attending a state-wide Christian men's fellowship in Athens, Texas. He remarked that he was not so much worried about getting Communists out of government as he is about getting Christians into it. Describing the fear of Communism and Socialism, he challenged Christians to forget their "obsession with the right and left and give more attention to the above and below."
"A nation under God." More than a motto; it is a challenge.
