Dr Henry Van Dyke, a famous author/minister of the 1890s, wrote a beautiful story entitled "The Other Wise Man." Briefly, it is a story of how one of the Magi who wanted to see the newly born King met him in another way. The Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, had waited for Artaban the Median in vain. They finally went ahead without him. We remember the gifts mentioned in verse 11, and then the way Artaban gave up his three jewels: a sapphire, a ruby, and a pearl to help people in need. Though he had no gift to give the Lord, he was accepted by the Lord because of his service to others.
Of the giving of gifts, especially by Christians at Christmas time, there is no end. Many of those gifts are already forgotten, though it has been a few days ago that they were given and received.
Giving gifts to help others is a more highly approved way of honoring our King and his Kingdom.
