After many years' hiatus my college roommate and his family came to our home for a long-delayed visit. Twenty years ago he'd stood with me at my wedding as my best man. Our sons had been born within two months of each other. But time and distance had conspired to keep us from regular visits. This time our two sons would be at the table during the visit. It wasn't long before each of the boys wanted to hear some of the old college stories. Once we started we could hardly stop. All of those hours we'd spent rehearsing music, wrestling with academic efforts, the crazy things that students do. As we talked the boys became increasingly interested. After a while they began to feel like they were a part of a longer history.
Upon receiving his Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980, Czeslaw Milosz commented, "Our planet that gets smaller every year, with its fantastic proliferation of mass media, is witnessing a process that escapes definition, characterized by a refusal to remember." We must remember our history if we are to know who we are as individuals and what we are as people.
