After what one church member judged an inappropriately controversial sermon the preacher heard the following charge. "I doubt that without American victory in World War II the church would have survived." The preacher paused for a moment and then reflected. Though the form and traditions are somewhat different, the Christian faith has survived throughout the world for nearly 2,000 years.
Indeed, in Russia the Orthodox Church recently celebrated its 1,000 year anniversary. Through Tsarist terror, Revolution and Communist Totalitarianism the Christian movement survived. Indeed, in the tumultuous months following the collapse of Communism in both Russia and Eastern Europe the church continues to flourish. As one United Methodist Bishop once said, would-be pallbearers have for centuries been putting on their gloves; but the church is not dead yet. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
