After years of waiting, a man was at last promoted to the position of foreman, but he soon found that this new job brought with it more worries than he had anticipated. After laying awake all night thinking about it, at the beginning of the workday he would hand out the various assignments and then, worried that things were not being carried out as he had ordered, he would throughout the day make his rounds, checking up to see what people were doing. The workers, not used to having someone come around so frequently to watch what they were doing, soon devised a tactic. Whenever he would come by, they would stop their work, offer him a cigarette, and sit down and chat with him for awhile. He eventually got the message. He could get more work out of people by trusting them to fulfill their obligations than by giving them the feeling they were constantly under suspicion.
