Alcohol, drugs, and pornography grab...

Alcohol, drugs, and pornography grab our attention. So do eating disorders, gambling,
and sexual aberrations. Something more destructive strangles life from people. Worse
than heart attacks and cancer, it ruins more lives than all the above. Happy, peace-loving
people change into rage-filled, out-of-control people. Causing depression and destroying
purposeful living, it crosses intelligence levels, color, age, and gender lines.
Few identify it as addictive. The media won't. It's growing worse. I refer to news addiction. We feel compelled to stay current. Like unscrupulous barkeeps, the media panders to this need. We need up-to-the-second reports on the state of the world, they insist.
If they brought information that saved or improved lives, it would be justified, but most news only frightens and angers us. We can do nothing but worry about 99 percent of it.
Are you a news addict? Consider Luke 13. People asked Jesus if he'd heard the latest bloodshed news. Many speculated about the meaning of it just like high-paid experts do today. Jesus warned them to be more concerned about a fateful coming event. He advised them to change their behavior and attitudes. Otherwise, they would die as the people did in the news just reported. Have you changed and given your life to God? Your death and God's judgment are coming. Unless you are prepared, all other news is a moot point.
