Of all the doctrines of the church, the most difficult to portray is the Trinity. It has been variously symbolized as three rabbits, one body with three heads, three identical men, or one head and three faces. The Russian artist, Andrei Rublev, took these verses of the three angels with Abraham at Mamre and showed the oak in the background and Abraham's house (not tent?). In 1425 Rublev saw the unity of the Trinity for his icon symbolized by a circular composition of three angels, each representing a member of the Trinity seated around a table. The figures are identical, but individuals. The Father is seated to the left in indefinite hue. The Son is in a purple chiton tunic and blue cloak in the center. The Spirit is clothed in green and has the vitality of a youth. One expert said, "The icon with its inexhaustible equilibrium of composition, majestically calm figures of the Angels, light, joyous summer colors, could only be the creation of a man who has stilled in his soul all agitation and doubt and was illumined by the light of the Knowledge of God."
